We are delighted to announce the return of our much-loved, ‘Penguins’ to Belfast, for just five days, to the Lyric Theatre, Belfast this December.
This co-production with Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Prime Theatre is an engaging story about friendship, fun, identity and the ever-changing meaning of what makes a family, featuring original music, magic and dance.
This theatre and dance production is inspired by a true story that touched hearts worldwide when reported in the New York Times – the tale of Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins living in Central Park Zoo, who together hatched an abandoned egg and raised a chick.
Just like the other penguin pairs at Central Park Zoo, Roy and Silo walk, play, swim and dance to- gether. When the duo decide to try and hatch a rock in place of an egg, they find themselves on an adventure that could mean raising a chick for real!
The Penguins creative team includes award-winning Director Paul Bosco Mc Eneaney, international Choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra and acclaimed Composer and Sound Designer Garth McConaghie.
Director Paul Bosco Mc Eneaney drew inspiration from this story and adapted it for the stage. He says, “I am thrilled to be bringing this heartwarming tale back to Belfast at this special time of the year. We have created a truly unique and uplifting theatre piece for our young audiences and their families to enjoy. Penguins is a highly visual, non-verbal performance with beautiful music, won- derful magic and a message of love and family that we hope will leave a lasting impression.”
This project is supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Caoileann Curry-Thompson, Arts Development Officer for Drama and Dance, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, commented, “The multi award-winning, internationally acclaimed, Cahoots NI, continue to offer audiences world-class children’s theatre with their show, Penguins, at the Lyric Theatre this December. The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is delighted to support this terrific production which will be enjoyed by many, helping to bring great art to everyone.”
Following a successful showcase for an industry audience at the International Performing Arts for Youth Conference in Philadelphia earlier this year, Penguins will embark on a tour of North America in early 2020.
